Men's Soccer Drops 1-0 Heartbreaker to Dutch

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Oct. 9, 2024) - The Buena Vista University men's soccer team hosted Central College on Wednesday night inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium, but the Beavers were dealt a heartbreaking 1-0 loss by the Dutch on a goal scored in the final three minutes of play.

With the score still tied at 0-0, Central took one of its eight corner kicks in the contest with just over 2:30 on the clock, and the kick by Alejo Marcon was sent to the center of the box and then headed into the back of the net by Joe Brown.

It was an intense and physical match from the opening whistle with both defenses making it difficult for the other to get many close scoring chances. The two sides combined for only seven total shots in the opening half and the Beavers were on the verge of scoring its first points during conference play since 2021 had the match ended in a BVU win or tie.

BVU had one of its best scoring chances of the night midway through the second half when junior Kendall Bickford faced a penalty kick opportunity but the Central's keeper, Ronan Murphy made a great diving save to his right to keep things tied at 0-0. Bickford finished with five of the team's six total shots, including all three on-goal.

Zachary Sigler was brilliant in-goal for the Beavers all night long, making numerous diving saves of his own while also stepping in and intercepting a number of cross passes. He finished the contest with five saves.

Buena Vista is now 8-5 overall (0-3 A-R-C) and travels to Simpson College on Saturday, Oct. 12, for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against the Storm.
