Game Preview #5: BVU travels to Nebraska Wesleyan

STORM LAKE, Iowa (OCT. 3, 2024) - The Buena Vista University football team (1-3, 1-1 A-R-C) is set to play its second away American Rivers Conference game on Saturday, Oct. 5, by traveling to face Nebraska Wesleyan University (1-2, 0-1 A-R-C).

INSIDE THE SERIES: BVU has won three straight games in the series…the two teams last met on Nov. 11, 2023 at BVU with the Beavers picking up a 25-20 victory…NWU's last victory against the Beavers came on Sept. 19, 2019 in Storm Lake where the Beavers fell (L, 16-37)..the series dates back to the first meeting in 2016 where Buena Vista won, 38-31.

SCOUTING THE PRAIRIE WOLVES

The Prairie Wolves begin their A-R-C home schedule in search of their first conference win of the year after a loss to No. 13 Wartburg 34-0 this past week. The team began the season 1-2 losing to Dakota State and beating Mayville State over their first two weeks. 

Starting quarterback Connor White helps lead the Prairie Wolves offensively, along with wide receiver Cole Siems. Through their first three games this season, White has completed roughly 60 percent of his pass attempts for 464 yards. He's thrown for two passing TD’s and has been intercepted five times. Siems is the team’s leading receiver with 182 yards on the season. The team is looking to establish an air attack, as it averages 232 passing yards per game.

Linebacker Jacob Leu has registered 13 total tackles to lead NWU. Linebacker Tony Militti is right behind with 12 total stops. The unit has two sacks on the year for 13 yards and has forced four fumbles.

Ryan Stortenbecker has punted eight times so far for 246 yards, averaging 30.75 yards per punt, with his long of 50. He has also put two inside the 20. The team has only attempted one field goal this season - not converting it - and Walter Henry has five kickoffs for 293 yards, averaging 58.6 yards per kick with one touchback.

ABOUT THE BEAVERS

BVU is going back on the road for its American Rivers Conference game this week against the Prairie Wolves. The Beavers are coming off its first A-R-C loss of the year - a 52-0 setback last Saturday against Central College.  

The Beavers are trying to find their stride on the offensive side of the ball where it is only averaging 10.00 points and 194.5 yards per game. Senior quarterback Zach Herrera has completed around 60 percent of his pass attempts for a combined 434 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Blaine Peebles has been among his favorite targets in the early going by catching 18 passes for 157 yards and two scores. Nine receivers have hauled in multiple receptions through three games.

On the ground, senior Eman Alaniz, has gotten the majority of the touches with 67 of the 105 overall rushing attempts. He's averaging 3.5 yards per carry and has rushed for 233 yards and two scores. He's also caught ten passes for 51 yards. Meven Obregon has the team's longest run from scrimmage this season at 52 yards on just his second carry of the year. That scamper resulted in the team's first touchdown of the game against WLC.

Defensively, junior linebacker Troy Reynolds has helped lead the way with 38 total tackles, including 20 solo stops. Defensive Lineman Keaton Bindel is second with 26, including 3.0 TFLs and two sacks and linebacker Nick Moorshead and Defensive Back Austin Smith are tied with 25, with Smith also recording one of the team's six interceptions of the year. As a unit, the Beavers have 14 TFL's overall and three sacks so far. Still looking to get off the field on third downs consistently, as opponents are converting nearly 50 percent of the time on third down (26-of-54).

Matthew Beisswenger has a team-leading three pass breakups and has also gotten the job down with his leg. Through four games, he has 23 punt attempts for an average of 32.96 yards per attempt. Eight of those have been fair caught with his long to this point in the year going for 57 yards, with four being inside the 20. He's also averaging nearly 53.5 yards per kickoff attempt and has made 2-of-4 field goal attempts.
