Kohawks Edge Volleyball in Three Sets

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Oct. 12, 2024) - The Buena Vista University volleyball team was right back on the court to begin the day on Saturday at Coe College, but the Beavers came up just short against the preseason favorites, by falling 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-22).

Fifth-year senior Rachel Brockney led BVU with seven kills to go along with 15 digs wile sophomore Jadyn Rausch turned in five kills, 14 digs and 17 assists. Sydney Meints chimed in with six kills and six total blocks.

The two teams came out strong in the opening set with the Beavers turning in 11 kills while the Kohawks registered a match-high 17. Coe built an early 8-5 lead before Brockney later had a kill and an ace serve followed directly by a kill from Meints that capped a 3-0 spurt and put them in front 11-10. The Beavers later used a 5-0 surge to take a 20-19 lead, but the Kohawks closed the set on a 6-1 run to win 25-21.

The Beavers managed only six kill and had seven attack errors during the second set that was all Coe. The Kohawks jumped out to a quick 10-3 cushion and never looked back. In the third set, it was tied 8-8 in the early going, and the Beavers kept within striking distance at 17-16, but the home team then scored four of the next five points to gain momentum en route to a 25-22 triumph.

Maggie Furlong led Coe (13-6, 3-1 A-R-C) with 13 kills and 12 assists while Gracie Urbatsch added 11 kills.

Buena Vista is now 5-15 overall (0-3 A-R-C). The Beavers return home for the first time in a month when they host Nebraska Wesleyan on Oct. 16 at 6 p.m.
