Buena Vista's Becca Simpson was named the American Rivers Conference Most Valuable Field Performer at the 2023 Outdoor Championships on May 11-13.

Simpson Earns a Trio of All-Conference Finishes; Named Conference Field MVP

DECORAH, Iowa (May 13, 2023) - Buena Vista University's Becca Simpson highlighted the American Rivers Conference Championships for the BVU women's team by earning to more all-conference accolades on Saturday while also being named the A-R-C Championship Field Most Valuable Performer.

After finishing as runner-up in the shot put on a miserable, rainy day on Friday, Simpson began her day on Saturday with another runner-up finish in the javelin despite setting a new school record of 148-10, surpassing her previous record of 147-10 set in 2021 and matched earlier this spring. She then concluded her final collegiate conference championship with a victory in the hammer throw with a championship meet and stadium record toss of 55.06m (180-7). With her performance, she becomes the first BVU Field Performer of the Year honoree.

Also earning all-conference accolades for the Beavers on the day was Jessica Sump, who placed third in the 100m hurdles for the second straight season with a new personal best time of 15.13 seconds. She was clipped at the finish line for second place by roughly two-tenths of a second.

Senior Katara Jondle came in sixth place in the 200m dash in a time of 25.50 seconds while also taking sixth in the 400m dash in 58.80 seconds.

The 4x100m relay team of Sump, Jondle, Hannah Olson and Kylie Johnston came in sixth but did post its season best time of 48.92 which ranks No. 4 on the program's all-time list.

Anna Friedrichsen scored points for the Beavers in the field events by claiming seventh in the hammer throw with her season-best toss of 49.94m (163-10).

Buena Vista totaled 55 points overall and placed sixth overall in the team standings. Nebraska Wesleyan was fifth with 78 points while Loras College claimed the overall team title with 243 points. Wartburg College was runner-up with 218.

BVU will send individuals to the Last Chance Meet at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., on Thursday, May 18. The NCAA Outdoor Championships will follow on May 25-27 in Rochester, N.Y.
