Topeka, Kan. (Feb. 19, 2023) - The Buena Vista University baseball team concluded its season-opening series with a Sunday afternoon matchup against Hamline University. The Beavers came away with a 11-5 victory. 

BVU's lineup continued its torrid start by scoring 11 runs on 14 hits. The Beavers were led by Drew Taylor and Logan Mueller. Taylor recorded three RBI and two runs on three hits. Mueller had a game-high four hits while scoring a pair of runs. Jordan Mathewson and Joel Garcia each posted multi-performances. Calvin Harris had the only homerun of the contest with a two-run shot in the first inning. Nolan Faber contributed off the bench with a two-run pinch-hit single. Zach Pleggenkuhle and Evan Taylor each drove in runs of their own while also scoring. 

Mason Gehling got the nod to start the series finale for the Beavers. A First Team All-Conference selection last season, Gehling picked up right where he left off, only allowing four hits while striking out seven across five dominant innings. A combination of Spencer Holmes, Landon Howard, Peyton Thomas, and Logan Pape-Brinkman in relief took the Beavers the rest of the way. 

With the win, BVU moves to 3-0 to start the season. The team returns to Topeka again next Saturday, Feb. 25 to begin a three-game weekend series against Bethel University.
