STORM LAKE, Iowa (Feb. 17) - Junior
Zane Neubaum nailed a career-high six three-point buckets and turned in a game-high 27 points to help lead the Buena Vista men's basketball team to a season-ending 74-72 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stout on Friday evening inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
Neubaum finished the game shooting 9-of-15 overall and was 6-of-10 from downtown. As a team, the Beavers shot a sizzling 6-of-12 from long range in the second half and was 11-of-28 for the game. Sophomore
Simon Daniel also had the touch from beyond the arc, making 4-of-8 attempts and ended with 13 points. Junior
Gunner Reed chipped in with 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
The Blue Devils held the lead for the majority of the first half, building a nine-point advantage midway through the half at 21-12 and continuing to lead by that same margin at 37-28 with 3:34 remaining. Mitchell Countryman was fouled with 0.3 seconds left and made the second of two attempts to give BVU the one-point lead (40-39) at the break.triple, to go along with a layup, to extend the margin to 15 at 54-39. Minutes late a layup from
Michael Santich gave the team its largest lead at 60-44.
UW-Stout wasn't about to back down and slowly began to chip away at that lead. The Blue Devils responded with a 16-3 run to get within 63-60 with 8:18 still to play. BVU pushed the cushion back to 69-60, but were unable to pull away as UW-Stout came right back to regain the lead at 72-71 with 2:31 left. Daniel capped the scoring with the last of his four three-point buckets to give the Beavers a 74-72 lead. UW-Stout came up short on a pair of three-point attempts on its next trip down the floor. The Blue Devils still had multiple opportunities to tie or take the lead over the final 90 seconds, but turned it over twice and came up empty on a jumper just outside the lane with under five seconds left.
Noah Valdez grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 1.3 seconds left. He missed the one-and-one attempt but the Blue Devils were unable to get a shot off.
The Beavers shot better than 52 percent from the field in the second half and finished at over 47 percent for the game. The Blue Devlis made seven attempts from long range but shot only 25 percent from behind the arc. Both teams went 11-of-14 at the free-throw line.
The Blue Devils (5-20) got 16 points apiece from George Scharlau and Carson Moe.
Buena Vista wraps up its season at 9-16. The game also ended the careers of Countryman and
Lucas Berens.
