Late Rally not Enough as Men's Soccer Falls to Storm 4-2

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Oct. 7, 2023) - The Buena Vista men's soccer team hosted Simpson College on Saturday afternoon and got goals from Caleb Swanson and Kendall Bickford, but the late surge was not quite enough as the Storm prevailed inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium, 4-2.

The Storm, which had seven first half shots, got on the board with just 12 minutes gone by and that score stood for the rest of the first half. BVU had three shot attempts in the half, but none came on-goal.

Simpson doubled the lead on a free-kick from just outside the middle of the box just five minutes into the second half before pushing the lead to 3-0 just two minutes later off a rebound from a saved shot attempt.

Trailing 4-0, the Beavers would get on the board in the 66th minute when Swanson dribbled down the field and launched a ball from over 25-yards that got past the keeper for his first goal of the year. Bickford scored for the sixth time this season with just over two minutes left to play from the left side of the net. It's the first time the team has scored multiple goals against a conference opponent since it concluded the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign with a 3-2 OT loss at Coe College. It also scored twice against Simpson that same season.

Bickford, along with Jacob Adams, turned in two shots for BVU as the Beavers totaled five in the contest. Tyler Pennington got the start in-goal for the blue and gold, and allowed three goals while making four saves over 58:08. He was relieved by Zachary Sigler, who played the rest of the match and made two saves while being charged with allowing the final goal.

Buena Vista is now 1-9-2 (0-4 A-R-C) and plays host to Coe College on Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m.
