Luther Gets Past Volleyball in Three Sets

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Oct. 6, 2023) - The Buena Vista volleyball team took the court inside of Siebens Fieldhouse for its fourth straight home match as it continued American Rivers Conference play against Luther College, but the Norse would rally late in both the second and third sets to hand the Beavers a tough 3-0 loss.

The Beavers started a little sluggish in the opening set as the Norse scored the first four points and went on to build a commanding 13-2 advantage. Luther continued to run away and would take the first set, 25-11. BVU did respond over the next two sets, but couldn't finish things off late. In the second set, the Beavers faced set point after a serving error by the Norse made it 24-23, but three straight attack errors by the blue and gold gave the set to Luther, 26-24.

The third set again came down to the wire. Luther led 5-2 in the early going before the Beavers rolled off four straight points to go in front 6-5. It was then back-and-forth until BVU went on a 5-1 run midway through to build a 14-10 lead. The Beavers appeared to be in control, but the Norse wouldn't go away and used a pivotal 6-0 surge to regain an 18-16 advantage. They were nearing match-point with a 23-20 cushion, but a kill from senior Rachel Brockney gave BVU the serve back which ultimately led to consecutive attack errors by the visitors that tied the set at 23-23. The Norse, however, got back-to-back kills from Sarina Stortz to end the set at 25-23 and give Luther the three-set sweep.
