DUBUQUE, Iowa (Oct. 21, 2023) - The Buena Vista football team went on the road looking to make it back-to-back wins this season, but the Beavers were held to only 100 yards of total offense, as the University of Dubuque went on to pick up a 41-0 victory.
A week after rushing for a season-high 143 yards in a Homecoming win over Luther, the Beavers were held to only 53 yards on the ground by the Spartans and only 43 through the air.
Dubuque went in front 7-0 less than five minutes into the contest with a 12-yard touchdown pass. The Spartans began the drive after BVU quarterback
Zach Herrera was intercepted on his second attempt of the game's opening drive. After the Beavers were forced into a three-and-out on the next drive, the Spartans went 58 yards in 10 plays before kicking a 28-yard field goal and a 10-0 advantage.
BVU was held without a first down in the opening half as the Spartans added a rushing touchdown, passing touchdown and a field goal in the second quarter to build a 27-0 advantage.
The Spartans (3-4, 3-2 A-R-C) received the second half kickoff and drove down the field for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 10:54 left in the quarter and a 34-0 cushion. They added the game's final score with 5:16 left in the quarter on a 12-yard TD pass.
On its first drive of the fourth quarter, the Beavers drove all the way down to the Dubuque 7-yard line, but were forced to turn it over on downs. That was the team's only drive which made it into Dubuque territory.
Herrera finished the game 5-of-10 passing for 11 yards with
Caleb Green completing one of his four tries for 26 yards. Green was also the team's leading rusher with 31 yards on nine carries with
Eman Alaniz adding 20 yards on 10 attempts.
Dubuque's balanced offensive attack was led by quarterback K.C. Moore passing for 294 yards and four touchdowns. He also used his legs to add 62 additional yards while Lovell Armstead was right behind with 60 yards on 10 carries.
Trey Ortman registered 11 total tackles to lead Buena Vista on the defensive side with
David Green and
Matthew Beisswenger following with nine tackles apiece. Beisswenger also punted six times for an average of 33.1 yards per attempt.
Buena Vista is now 1-6 overall (1-5 A-R-C) and returns home to host Loras College on Oct. 28 at 1 p.m.
