Vanessa Hamlett added 10 to lead the Buena Vista women's basketball team as it traveled to Luther College on Saturday, but it was the Norse holding off the Beavers, 73-58.
The Norse built an 18-point halftime, but BVU closed the third quarter on a 12-4 run and pulled within nine at 52-43. A layup from Hamlett to start the fourth quarter made it a seven-point game, but an 11-2 surge by the Norse pushed the margin back to 16 and it remained in double digits from there.
It was a 14-13 contest midway through the first quarter before a 10-0 Luther run to close out the period made it 24-13 advantage. It was back-and-forth to begin the second, but the Norse would push it to double digits and lead by 18 at the break.
Cone finished 7-of-18 shooting from the field and made 2-of-7 from long range. Hamlett was 4-of-7 overall and 2-of-2 at the free-throw line. She also tied with
Lindsey Anhalt for the team lead with seven rebounds.
Danika Demers chipped in with seven points, six rebounds and six assists.
The Beavers shot 39 percent from the field but just 5-of-25 from downtown. They also made 7-of-11 from the charity stripe. Luther made just three more field goals, but made 10 more free-throws and held a 21-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
Megan Miller scored 20 points to lead the Norse (12-8, 7-4 A-R-C) with Kailey Jones scoring 16 points and hauling in 10 rebounds.
Buena Vista is now 6-13 overall (1-10 A-R-C) and will host the University of Dubuque on Feb. 1 at 5:30 p.m.
