Men's Basketball Tripped up at Home by Loras 81-66

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Jan. 21, 2023) - Junior Gunner Reed scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds while fellow junior Zane Neubaum followed with 12 points, but it wasn't enough for the Buena Vista men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon during an 81-66 home loss to Loras College.

BVU started strong with Simon Daniel knocking down back-to-back three pointers and Neubaum sinking all three free-throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt to take a 9-2 lead. The Beavers would maintain that cushion throughout the early portion of the game and eventually built their largest lead at 35-25 with five minutes left in the first half.

The team then went on a cold spell, including 0-15 from beyond the arc following Daniel's two early makes, and scored only three points down the stretch as the Duhawks used an 18-3 run to take a 43-38 lead into the break.

Loras was called for a technical foul after the halftime buzzer sounded and Ryan Mendoza calmly sank the two free-throw attempts coming out of the half. BVU also started with the ball and got a layup from Neubaum which cut the deficit down to 43-42.  That was as close as the Beavers would get as the Duhawks went on an 11-2 run over the next four minutes and BVU got no closer than seven the rest of the way.

Ali Sabet scored a game-high 22 points for Loras, while Myles Barry and Declan Ciurlik followed with 14 and 12, respectively. The trio combined to make nine of the team's 11 three-point buckets as the Duhawks (12-6, 6-3 A-R-C) shot just under 40 percent from behind the arc.

BVU (7-10, 1-8 A-R-C) was held to 5-of-27 from long range and only 35.5 percent overall.

The Beavers next take the floor on Jan. 25 when they travel to Neb. Wesleyan (11-7, 6-3 A-R-C) for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off down in Lincoln, Neb.
