STORM LAKE, Iowa (Sept. 16, 2022) - The Buena Vista football team is coming off its first victory of the year a week ago to host Coe College (1-1) for the American Rivers Conference opener on Saturday night inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.

Inside the Series - Saturday marks the 27th meeting all-time between the two teams with the Kohawks winning the last 12 games played. Last season, BVU went on the road and fell in a tough 31-28 contest. The Beavers' last win in the series came in 2008 in Cedar Rapids wih a 19-10 triumph.

LAST WEEK: The Beavers got into the win column when they went on the road for the first time this season and had a big fourth quarter to comeback and defeat Lakeland University in the first-ever meeting against the Muskies. Sophomore quarterback Zach Herrera passed four 363 yards and four touchdowns while Eman Alaniz added 128 yards rushing and one score. BVU trailed 31-10 before rolling off four straight touchdowns and adding a late field goal.
About Coe - The Kohawks begin conference play looking to bounce back from a tough 33-24 road loss at Hope College (Mich.) last Saturday despite posting nearly 100 more yards of total offense. A year ago, the Kohawks finished 6-2 in conference play and were picked to finish third this season. The team has six starters return on the offensive side of the ball this season with four on defense. Among those is senior First Team All-Conference selection, Alex Aitchison. He has four total tackles so far this season, including three for a loss, to go along with three quarterback hurries. Through two games, the Kohawks lead the A-R-C in scoring and third in scoring defese. A great deal of its offensive success to this point has come on the ground with an average of 223.0 rushing yards per contest. That leads the A-R-C by over 80.0 yards per contest. Trenton Barnes 148 yards on the ground while Ray Seidel has 100 yards and three touchdowns. Nick Casey has 194 yards passing while Matt Walton has 154. The two have combined for three passing scores and six interceptions. Defensively, the Kohawks are holding opponents to 135 yards per game through the air and 83.5 on the ground.

BVU trailed 31-10 before scoring four straight touchdowns and adding a late field goal to earn the win in the first-ever meeting with the Muskies. Zach Herrera passed for a career-high 363 yards and four touchdowns while Eman Alaniz had 128 yards rushing on 37 attempts. Through his first two collegiate outings, Herrera has passed for 461 yards and is fifth in the league in yards per game and third with four scores. Alaniz is fourth in the A-R-C in rushing yards per game. Defensively, Brandon Lance had a career-high 12 total stops against the Muskies and leads the team and sits 14th in the league at 7.5 tackles per game. BVU is third in the league with three interceptions. The Beavers finished last season at 4-4 in conference play and were picked to finish fifth here in 2022.
