Glenn Perfect as Baseball Claims DH Sweep of Central

PELLA, Iowa (March 26, 2022) - The Buena Vista baseball team capped off its three-game series sweep at Central on Sunday afternoon in perfect fashion as Dalton Glenn threw the program's first known perfect game during BVU's 12-0 victory over the Dutch.  The victory followed a thrilling come-from-behind 22-18 triumph in game one.

Glenn shutdown a Dutch offense that had scored 17 runs over the first four innings against BVU in game one and recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts in the process, including mowing down the side in the seventh.  Dan Christiansen threw the program's last no-hitter - also against the Dutch - back on April 18, 2002.

BVU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and scored in six of the seven innings.  The Beavers were able to push across five in the seventh to help set-up the seven-inning 10-run rule as they out-hit Central, 18-0.  Jordan Mathewson was 4-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored while Joel Garcia doubled and tacked on three hits and two runs scored.  Logan Mueller and Calvin Harris also tallied three hits apiece with Grant Oseka driving in a team-high three runs.

Evan Taylor, who had a team-leading four hits and six RBI in the contest, blasted a two-run home run during the first inning of the opener to put BVU in front early but that was the last lead the Beavers had until the late innings.  Central responded right back with a grand slam in the bottom of the first against Beaver starter Mark Eddie while adding four more runs in the second to go up 8-5.  The Dutch then blew the game open with a nine-run fourth inning to make it a 17-5 cushion.  BVU began its comeback with seven runs in the sixth and one in the seventh before regaining the lead with six more in the eighth, including a two-run double by Drew Taylor that gave the team an 18-17 lead.  BVU took a 22-17 lead into the ninth and Calvin Harris held off a Central rally by allowing only one run in his inning of work.

Mason Gehling picked up the win in relief, pitching 4.2 innings and being charged with two unearned runs and three hits while walking four and striking out seven.  Eddie made the start and pitched 3.1 innings and was charged with 11 runs and nine hits despite striking out seven and walking four.

Aside from Taylor's four hits, his twin brother, Drew, chipped in with three, including one double, to go along with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Harris also doubled and posted three hits and three RBI.  BVU scattered 19 hits total in the contest.

Buena Vista runs its overall record to 11-6 while moving to 3-0 in American Rivers Conference play.  The Beavers are back on the diamond next weekend when it returns home for a three-game A-R-C series against Loras College.  First pitch for Friday night's series opener is set for 6:00 p.m.
