STORM LAKE, Iowa (March 16, 2022) - The Buena Vista University baseball team played its home opener on Wednesday evening, hosting Morningside College, but the Mustangs held on to defeat the Beavers, 10-6.
It was a pitcher's duel throughout the first three innings as the Beavers went pitcher-by-committee.Â
Mark Eddie got the start and pitched a perfect inning before handing things over to
Dalton Glenn who struck out two of the three batters he faced in the second.Â
Morgan Smith worked the third and recorded a strikeout and a pair of ground outs.
BVU broke the scoreless game in the third when junior
Zack Beekmann lifted a sacrifice fly into centerfield to make it 1-0.
The Mustangs would then take the lead for good when they scored four times in the fourth inning on five hits before pushing across three more runs in the fifth to extend the margin to 7-1. BVU cut the deficit down to 7-5 when it plated four runs on just two hits, including one on a wild pitch.
The Beavers couldn't get the big base hit all game when the team needed it most and was out-hit 14-4 overall. Morningside added two more runs in the eight and one more in the ninth before BVU scored once in the ninth and had the bases loaded and just one out but a ground out and fly out ended the game.
Joel Garcia had two of the BVU's four hits and also walked once.Â
Calvin Harris had a two-run double and was also hit by a pitch.
Brayden Polzien suffered the loss after allowing four runs and five hits in his one inning of work.Â
Buena Vista falls to 7-5 overall and looks to end the four-game skid when it travels to Bethany Lutheran on Saturday, March 19 for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
