CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Feb. 4, 2022) - The Buena Vista men's basketball team led by seven at halftime on the road at Coe on Saturday but the Kohawks rallied late and hung on for a narrow 65-62 victory inside Kohawk Arena.
Jake Thompson scored a game-high 19 points to help lead the Beavers while
Zane Neubaum added 10. Thompson also led the way with eight rebounds while Neubaum added six boards and a game-high four blocks. Six of the seven players that scored for the Beavers chalked up at least seven points.
BVU shot 50 percent from the field in the second half despite going just 1-of-8 from downtown. The team held Coe to just 40 percent shooting but the Kohawks did make five three-point buckets over the final 20 minutes and also went 11-of-13 from the free-throw line. BVU only had nine trips to the charity stripe, making just five.
The Beavers held multiple 10-point advantages, including a 45-35 lead with 12 minutes left. The Kohawks then used a 13-2 surge to grab their first lead of the afternoon at 48-47. The two teams then went back-and-forth with the lead changing hands multiple times. Thompson made a three-point bucket to give BVU a 56-55 lead with under five minutes to play, but Coe came right back with a long range bucket of its own to grab the lead for good at 58-56. Â
Neubaum then made a bucket and a free-throw to pull the Beavers within a single point at 63-62 with just over a minute to play. BVU later had a chance to take the lead but Neubaum lost control of the ball as he was going to go up for a layup with just 12 seconds left.
Coe then made a pair of free-throws to extend the margin up to 65-62 and the last second three-point shot by
Garrett Sittner came up just short.
The Kohawks take over sole possession of third place in the American Rivers Conference standings at 9-4 with the victory while the Beavers sit one game back at 8-5.
Buena Vista, now 11-11 overall, will look to bounce back on Wednesday night, February 9, as the team hosts Simpson College inside of Siebens Fieldhouse at 7:30 p.m.
