Baseball Rallies to Win Season Opener over Hamline 12-7

OMAHA, Neb. (February 19, 2022) - The Buena Vista University baseball team scored a combined seven runs over the seventh and eighth innings as it rallied for a 12-7 victory to begin the season on Saturday affernoon against Hamline University in a game played at Westside High School.

Freshman Evan Taylor had a pair of hits and three RBI for BVU, including an RBI single in the seventh inning that started the rally.  Junior Grant Oseka also had two hits and two RBI while scoring twice.  He had a big two-run double during the team's five-run fifth inning.  Caden Mathewson was the third player with two hits as he also scored a pair of runs.

Freshman Joel Garcia made the most of his first collegiate plate appearance by coming through with a bases-clearing three-run double in the eighth inning that broke open what was a 9-7 game at the time.

The Beavers chalked up 11 hits overall in the contest and had eight different players post at least one.

Hamline built an early 4-0 lead with a run in the second, two in the third and one more in the fourth.  The Beavers didn't get on the board until the five-run fifth.

Dalton Glenn got the start on the mound and finished with a no-decision after going five innings and allowing four runs and seven hits.  Braden Polzien came on in relief and went the final four frames, allowing three runs (one earned) and just one hit to earn the win.

M. Gerstner led the Pipers with two hits.

Buena Vista is now 1-0 while Hamline drops to 0-1.  The same two teams will be back out on the diamond on Sunday for a doubleheader to complete the three-game series.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.
