Zane Neubaum scored a career-high 44 points while juniors
Gunner Reed and
Ryan Mendoza followed wth career-highs of 31 apiece, and the Buena Vista men's basketball team began the NWU Snyder Classic, hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan, with a 137-106 victory over Greenville University (Ill.) on Friday evening.
Neubaum, who set a new Classic record with his 44-point outburst, finished the game shooting 20-of-27 from the field and also grabbed seven rebounds. Mendoza was 9-of-18 shooting and also made a career-best 12-of-13 at the charity stripe. Reed, meanwhile, was 15-of-22 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds for his first double-double in a Beaver uniform.
Simon Daniel chimed in with 15 points, seven rebounds, four steals and six assists.
BVU was over 71 percent shooting in the second half and finished the contest at 67 percent overall. The team, which faced the run-and-gun style offense by the Panthers, got most of its points in transition or down by the rim, scoring 100 points in the paint.
Greenville took 54 three-point attempts in the contest, making 15. BVU attempted only eight and made two.
It was back-and-forth throughout most of the first half with BVU leading by as many as six while Greenvlle held an eight-point cushion. The Panthers led 50-49 with just 2:59 left before the Beavers closed out the period on an 11-4 run to lead 60-54 at the break.
A layup by Neubaum 2:30 into the second half gave BVU the game's first double-digit advantage at 72-62. The lead reached 20 with just over 12 minutes remaining and Greenville (0-6) was unable to get any closer than 15 from there while the Beavers went on to set a new single-game Classic record with the 137 points.
Buena Vista snaps a two-game losing skid and improves to 3-2 on the year. The team will wrap up the trip with a match-up against North Central (Minn.) on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
