Volleyball Sweeps Dubuque to Move to 3-2 in A-R-C

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Oct. 8, 2022) - The Buena Vista volleyball team wrapped up its weekend homestand on Saturday afternoon with a commanding 3-0 sweep of the University of Dubuque by scores of 25-20, 25-21, 25-21.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in the opening set, but the Beavers took control from there, scoring three straight two tie it up at 6-6. That propelled an 11-2 run that put BVU up for good at 14-8. The margin was 21-14 late in the set before Dubuque hung tough to battle within 21-18. The Beavers then got kills from Hannah Smith and Molly McCauley and a bat set from the Spartans that put them up 24-18.

It was a back-and-forth second set until Dubuque extended its lead to 14-9 midway through and continued to stay in front, 18-14. Smith powered her way to a pair of kills while Dubuque had a pair of attack errors that aided in a 4-0 run to tie things up at 18-18. After the visitors pushed ahead 19-18, a serving error by the Spartans then ignited another 4-0 spurt which lifted the Beavers to a 2-0 lead.

BVU was able to take advantage of 10 Dubuque attack errors in the final set. The Beavers built a 12-5 lead and later strung together four straight points for a 20-11 cushion. Dubuque made it interesting down the stretch, clawing back to 24-21, but the final hitting error of the match gave the Beavers the sweep.

Junior Rachel Brockney again helped lead the way with 10 kills and just four errors. Smith added nine kills and four errors while McCauley finished with 6 kills, five digs and four block assists. Senior Taylor Wedemeyer dished out 26 assists and moves within 200 of moving into the top-3 all-time in program history.

Dubuque (9-11, 3-2 A-R-C) was led at the net by Emma Powell's match-high 16 kills.

Buena Vista improves to 8-10 overall (3-2 A-R-C). The team takes the court again on Wednesday, October 12, at Saint Mary's (Minn.) for a non-conference match at 7:00 p.m.
