WINONA, Minn. (Oct. 12, 2022) - For the third time this season, the Buena Vista volleyball team faced Saint Mary's (Minn.), but for the first time it came away with a victory by claiming a 3-1 road win on Wednesday night.
BVU turned in one of its stronger overall hitting performances of the year with three individuals posting over 10 kills, and as a team, it registered a .245 attack percentage.
The Beavers came out strong by jumping out to a 9-3 lead in the opening set before Saint Mary's rallied to tie it at 9-9. BVU then came back with another 9-3 run and closed out the set by scoring the final six points en route to the 25-17 victory.
Saint Mary's forced the Beavers into nine attack errors in the second set, and despite holding an 18-15 lead late in the frame, BVU would fall 25-23. The team, however, responded in the big way with 25-14 and 25-16 triumphs in the next two sets to claim the match.
Junior Rachel Brockey again helped lead the way with 14 kills and 18 digs while
Courtney Johnson and
Molly McCauley each added 12 kills. McCauley also added a team-high five ace serves with Johnson chipping in with two blocks. Senior
Taylor Wedemeyer dished out 42 assists to go along with nine digs.
Skylar Cole added four total blocks, and also was strong on the other side with six kills and only one error on just 14 total swings.
Abbie Stigler lead Saint Mary's (9-11) with a match-high 18 kills.Â
The win is the the third straight triumph overall this season for Buena Vista which runs its season record to 9-10. The team is now off until Friday, October 21 when it plays at Luther College at 6:00 p.m.
