WEEK #8 PREVIEW: Beaver Football Heads to Neb. Wesleyan on Saturday

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Oct. 21, 2022) - The Buena Vista football team plays its final road game this month when it travels to Nebraska Wesleyan University for a late afternoon kick-off with the Prairie Wolves on Saturday afternoon.

Inside the Series - The two programs will meet on the gridiron for the 10th time overall with the Prairie Wolves leading the series (5-3-1). The first-ever meeting came back in 1952 as the teams played each other once per year through the 1955 campaign.  That would mark the final meeting until NWU joined the American Rivers Conference and the two sides met up starting in 2016. This will be only the fourth time BVU has played NWU on the road and the first in Lincoln since 2018 where BVU fell 32-25. The Beavers won last year's match-up in Storm Lake, 50-7.

LAST WEEK: The Beavers were tied with Central 14-14 after the first quarter but the Dutch outscored BVU 27-0 in the second quarter, as the Beavers dropped the home contest, 52-27. BVU had 377 yards of total offense and three passing touchdowns. Mason Griffith had 102 yards rushing and one touchdown while also hauling in one of the passing TD's. Zach Herrera tossed for 144 yards while Seth Gallardo was 9-12 for-12 with 115 yards and a score. 

About Neb. Wesleyan  - Since coming out on top in its season opener, 31-6 at Eureka, the Prairie Wolves have lost five straight games, including the last two against Central and Wartburg by a combined 123-0 margin. It's other two conference setbacks were a 14-point loss to Dubuque and an 18-point loss to Loras. During conference play, the Prairie Wolves rank ninth in scoring at 16.3ppg and in points allowed per game (55.0ppg). The defense has been plagued by allowing nearly 300.0ypg and 316.0ypg through the air. Offensively, the team is averaging 88.0ypg on the ground while passing for 223.0. Trystin Myers has carried the load for the team with his legs and is currently ranked third in rushing yards per game across the league at 78.8ypg. Nathan Minarik is the next closest teammate at 8.3ypg. Myers had 104 yards last week against the Knights and also posted a 100-yard performance (103) in the A-R-C opener against Dubuque. In the passing game, Carter Terry has attempted all but 24 of the team's 260 pass attempts on the year. He is currently ranked seventh in the A-R-C during conference play at 192.0ypg. He has been held to only 178 combined yards through the air the last two weeks and has a season-high 373 yards passing against the Spartans. Defensively, the Prairie Wolves have just five sacks and seven interceptions. Caleb Kyes has been the team-leader with 55 total tackles but just 2.5 for a loss. TJ Roybal is next with 41 tackles, including three for a loss, to go along with one interception. 

About Buena Vista: The Beavers look to end a three-game overall losing streak since winning a 52-49 thriller at Luther back on September 24. Turnovers have plagued the team over the last two weeks with 11 total which have lead to over 50 points. The Beavers rank sixth during conference play in rushing at nearly 127.0ypg. Tailback Mason Griffith has a pair of 100-yard performances over the last three weeks and scored his first two touchdowns of the year last week against the Dutch. BVU is also sixth in the league in passing offense, averaging 236.2ypg. Sophomore quarterback Zach Herrera is sixth, individually, averaging just shy of 200.0ypg, but will look to cut down on the interceptions as he's been picked off eight times over the last three contests. Jeremy Woodward ranks sixth in the league, defensively, averaging 7.8 tackles per game. The Beavers are allowing over 45.0ppg during conference play and rank sixth in total defense (511.0ypg). It's been hindered most recently through the air and rank ninth in passing yards allowed per game (331.8ypg). 

UP NEXT - Buena Vista returns home next weekend to play its final home game of the year when it hosts Wartburg College at 1:00 p.m.
