STORM LAKE, Iowa (Jauary 31, 2022) - Freshman
Mallory McCall registered her third career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds and was one of four players to score in double digits for the Buena Vista women's basketball team as the Beavers rolled to a 73-52 home win over visiting Central College on Monday night.
The Dutch made a free-throw for the game's first points but BVU came right back with three straight buckets and a 6-1 lead and the Beavers never looked back. After Central made it 6-5 midway through the opening quarter, the Beavers finished strong and led 15-9 after one. BVU began to pull away midway through the second quarter by building a 15-point cushion at 26-11 and went on to lead 30-18 at the break.
Fellow freshman
Taylor Krager nailed a three-pointer from the corner on the first possession of the second half to spark a quick 9-0 run that also included four straight points from junior
Vanessa Hamlett. Later in the quarter, Krager made another long range bucket that gave BVU its largest of 26 at 48-22. The Beavers maintained that cushion the rest of the way, leading 52-32 thru three quarters and letting the Dutch get no closer than 17 in the final stanza.
Lindsey Anhalt added 12 points for the Beavers while Krager turned in 11 and Hamlett 10. BVU shot 44 percent from the field overall and converted 8-of-10 at the free-throw line.
Defensively, the Beavers held Central (3-10, 1-6 A-R-C) to just 33 percent shooting overall, and the Dutch didn't help themselves out by connecting on only 12-of-24 from the charity stripe.
Buena Vista (7-10, 5-6 A-R-C) has now won three straight games overall and will look to keep the momentum going with two big road games yet this week, starting on Wednesday night at the University of Dubuque (12-8, 6-5 A-R-C). BVU knocked off the Spartans to begin American Rivers Conference play back in November, 76-67. Tip-off inside of the Stoltz Center is 5:30 p.m.
