STORM LAKE, Iowa (January 29, 2022) - Senior
Jake Thompson already has one triple-double this season and flirted with a second on Saturday afternoon by scoring 22 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out six assists to help lead the Buea Vista men's basketball team to a hard fought 63-48 home victory over Luther College on Alumni Day.
Thompson finished the game shooting 8-of-18 from the field overall, including 5-of-11 from long range. The five makes from beyond the arc are a career-high. Sophomore
Zane Neubaum added eight points,Â
Michael Demers added seven points, five rebounds and four assists and
Garrett Sittner also chimed in with seven points off the bench.
BVU came out strong and shot 50 percent from the field in the first half but the offense couldn't keep that going in the second as it was held to just 29.63 percent. Thompson made three straight long rage buckets to start the game as BVU went 6-of-17 over the first 20 minutes but cooled off to a 2-for-12 clip in the second half.
The Beavers led 26-21 with just over five minutes to go in the opening half before closing on a 16-6 surge to lead 42-27 at the break. After leading by as many as 18 early in the second half, the Beavers saw Luther come storming back thanks in part to a couple buzzer-beating three-point shots just before the shot clock expired. The Norse cut the BVU lead down to seven at 53-46 but that was as close as they could get. A jumped from Demers put BVU back up 10 at 56-46 with under 7:00 remaining and the two teams combined for only nine points the rest of the way.Â
Randall Days scored a team-leading 11 points to lead Luther while Ben Gill added 10. BVU held the Norse to 36.5 percent shooting from the field and to only seven free-throw attempts in the contest.
Buena Vista is back to .500 overall at 10-10 while improving to 7-4 in A-R-C play. The Beavers head back on the road for a pair of big games this next week beginning at league-leading Dubuque on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
