Loras Snaps Men's Basketball Conference Win Streak at Six

DUBQUUE, Iowa (January 22, 2022) - The Buena Vista University men's basketball team had its season-long six game conference winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon as the Beavers fell on the road at Loras College, 78-63.

Jake Thompson scored 19 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists to help lead the way for the Beavers, while Michael Demers scored 12 points and added three boards.  MIchael Santich was the third player to reach double figures with 11 points, including one of the team's five three-point buckets. Thompson made a team-leading three long range shots as BVU was just 5-of-27 overall.

BVU led for most of the first half, including a 12-point cushion at 32-20 with 6:15 left.  That's when the momentum began to shift as the Duhawks used a 14-2 run down the stretch, capped by a buzzer-beating three-point bucket as the first half horn sounded which tied the game at 34-34 heading to the locker room.

Loras scored the first six points of the second half and later opened up its first double-digit lead of the game at 53-43 just eight minutes in.  BVU hung around most of the half, trailing by only nine at 71-62 with over four minutes still to play, but the Duhawks held the Beavers to only one more free-throw the rest of the way as they scored eight of the game's final nine points.

BVU was held to only 39 percent shooting overall and was just 2-of-12 in the second half from beyond the arc.  The team did make 8-of-10 free-throw attempts.

Loras shot over 50 percent in both halves and finished the game at 55.4 percent, despite making just 6-of-17 from downtown.  The Duhawks scored 44 points in the paint and had 11 second chance points compared to only two for BVU.

Cole Navigato scored a game-high 22 points to help lead the Duhawks, who improve to 12-5 (4-4 A-R-C).

Buena Vista is now 9-9 overall (6-3 A-R-C) and will host Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday, January 26, at 7:30 p.m.
