Storm Lake, Iowa (June 28, 2021) – Buena Vista University has named Scott Brown its new Director of Athletics, effective July 1.
 
Brown, who currently serves BVU as Executive Director of Development in University Advancement, brings extensive experience to the new position, one in which he will help direct a staff involved in fielding 22 intercollegiate athletic teams.
 
"We are delighted to name Scott Brown as BVU Director of Athletics," says President Brian Lenzmeier. "Scott has a wealth of experience in NCAA athletics, ranging from strategic planning to personnel to fundraising to alumni relations, and more. Scott has succeeded in a variety of athletic department roles while serving South Dakota State University, UCLA, and the University of Iowa. His thorough knowledge and ability to collaborate with members all throughout the BVU family position Beaver Athletics for a future brimming with promise."

 
Brown's hiring is augmented by a pair of promotions within BVU's Department of Athletics. First, Amy Maier has been promoted to Associate Director of Athletics as she continues her essential work as chief operations officer for the department. Steve Eddie, meantime, will continue as Head Baseball Coach while assuming responsibilities as BVU Assistant Director of Athletics—a role in which Eddie will serve as a mentor in advising and supporting fellow BVU coaches as they work to build and maintain winning Beaver programs with student-athletes primed for success in their chosen sport and beyond.
 
"We're thrilled with the work Amy Maier and Steve Eddie have done for years at BVU," Lenzmeier continues. "Working closely with Scott Brown in these leadership roles will allow Amy and Steve—and the rest of our BVU Athletics staff—to advance our programs for the benefit of our student-athletes and the broader BVU community."
 
Scott Brown, son of Ted and the late Carolyn Brown, attended Beaver Athletics events as a child growing up in Storm Lake. He competed in multiple sports during his time as a prep at Storm Lake St. Mary's High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts studying sport administration and political science at Simpson College while competing in both basketball and baseball. After earning a master's degree in sport management at Western Illinois University, he started his career by serving the University of Iowa Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
 
"I am beyond thrilled to be back home in Storm Lake serving BVU, the origin of my earliest memories in intercollegiate athletics," says Brown. "I watched the Beavers in just about every sport, starting when I was in elementary school. I remember the action, the intensity, and how the sights and sounds of competition inspired me to grow as a student-athlete."
 
Competing at the high school and NCAA Division III levels provides Brown a frame of reference when communicating with today's student-athletes as he works to provide each of them an optimum intercollegiate experience. That will come about, he says, through the work of BVU's dedicated coaches, its faculty and staff, as well friends, fans, and a growing network of BVU Alumni.
 
"I am fortunate to be surrounded by people dedicated to doing everything they can for our student-athletes," Brown says. "That starts with President Lenzmeier, a former collegiate student-athlete himself, and goes through and beyond staff members such as Amy Maier and Steve Eddie, the kind of committed staff members and coaches around whom we'll build Beaver Athletics.
 
"Additionally, I can't wait to communicate frequently with BVU Alumni and benefactors, whose continued support has helped make BVU a destination for tens of thousands of student-athletes, young people who ultimately transition from success on the court, field, or track, and go on to serve integral roles in their businesses and communities, taking the lessons they learned as Beavers and applying them in service to others."
 
Brown and his wife, Kristy (McGowan) Brown, a native of Alta, are the parents of three children, Kinley, 9, Easton, 7, and Blakely, 5, all of whom will soon follow in their father's footsteps, becoming a familiar presence cheering on the Beavers in a whole host of sports.
