Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball has Season Come to an End with a Pair of Tough Losses to Kohawks

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (May 21, 2021) - The Buena Vista baseball team was six outs away from a trip to the tournament championship game before Coe College rallied to win game one in walk-off fashion on Friday afternoon.  The Kohawks then scored 10 unanswered runs in winner-take-all match-up en route to a 17-2 victory in seven innings.

Zach Beekmann gave the Beavers a 3-2 lead in the opener with a solo home run in the sixth inning but the Kohawks had an answer for each BVU score on the day.  Coe hit a solo home run of its own in the seventh inning, and then got a one-out RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth to force the winner-take-all game.

BVU got an RBI double from Calvin Harris in the third for a 1-0 lead and an RBI single from Jordan Mathewson in the fifth for a 2-1 advantage.  BVU stranded eight runners in the contest while Coe left 10 on base.

Mason Gehling battled through four innings to hold the Kohawks (35-6) to only two runs and five hits while striking out six despite throwing 90 pitches.  He then handed the ball over the Michael Demers who went on to pitch the rest of the contest, allowing two runs and five hits while striking out three.

Jordan Mathewson finished 3-for-4 to run his hitting streak to seven straight.  He was also hit by pitch and drove in one.  Harris, Beekmann and Easton Bahr each turned in two hits with all three also recording an extra-base knock.

Senior Parker Truesdell launched a solo home run in the first inning of the decisive game two to put BVU up 1-0 early on.  From there, though, the Beavers managed just two hits while watching the Kohawks put up 17 unanswered runs, including a 10-run sixth inning.  Fellow senior Nick Henrichs added the game's final run when he belted a solo home run in the ninth in what would prove to be his final career at-bat.

Henrichs made the start on the mound as well and was charged with three runs and four hits in just one inning.

Buena Vista closed out its season at 21-23 overall.
