STORM LAKE, Iowa (April 25, 2021) - The Buena Vista baseball team was three outs away from a three-game series sweep over top-ranked Washington University-St. Louis, but the Bears rallied in the ninth with six runs to come back and hand the Beavers a tough 7-5 loss on Sunday afternoon.
It was another pitcher's duel in the early going until Wash U broke a scoreless game with a two-out RBI single in the fifth. BVU, however, was able to respond in the bottom half with more small ball execution. After a leadoff single by
Logan Mueller,
Parker Truesdell laid down a bunt and would reach on a throwing error by the catcher that advanced Muller all the way to third.Â
Ryley McGregor then converted a safety squeeze that scored Mueller, who dove into home plate just ahead of the throw.
Tyler Tennyson, who had three doubles during Saturday's doubleheader sweep, added his fourth two-bagger of the series to put BVU in front 2-1 in the sixth. The Beavers then added three big insurance runs in the eighth, including a bases loaded walk from
Easton Bahr and an RBI infield single from
Tyler Stoltze, which also resulted in a second run scoring after a throwing error by the Bears third baseman.
Wash U was down to its final three outs, but Bears were aided in their late-game rally by three hit batters to start the ninth inning, a wild pitch with one out that tied the game at 5-5 and then a two-run single that gave them a two-run lead.
BVU got a leadoff single from
Calvin Harris to begin the bottom half of the inning, but the Bears then got a strikeout, flyout and a fielder's choice to end the game.
Truesdell finished the game 2-for-3, including his fourth double of the season, and also scored one run. Harris added two hits and scored once as BVU tallied eight hits overall in the contest.
Dalton Glenn made the start on the mound and pitched 4.2 innings, allowing just one run while scattering seven hits and striking out three. The bullpen then took over and allowed just one hit and a pair of walks over the next 3.1 innings before the Bears rally in the final inning. Harris (1-1) suffered the loss after being charged with four runs and three hits.
Buena Vista (11-17) returns to the conference slate next weekend when it travels to the University of Dubuque for a four-game weekend series to be played with doubleheaders on Friday, April, 30 and Sunday, May 2. First pitch on both days is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
