Baseball Edged in a Pair of 2-0 Contests by Wartburg on Sunday

WAVERLY, Iowa (April 18, 2021) - Wartburg College handed the Buena Vista baseball team a pair of 2-0 setbacks on Sunday afternoon to close out the four-game American Rivers Conference weekend series.

The Beavers were held to only one hit in the opener - a leadoff double by Calvin Harris to begin the fifth.  Grant Oseka was hit by a pitch later in the inning, and the two moved up to second and third with two outs after a balk, but were stranded there.

Wartburg finished with 10 hits overall and pushed across single runs in both the second and sixth innings.  Senior Michael Demers got the start on the mound and suffered a tough loss after allowing just one run and scattering seven hits while striking out two over 3.2 innings.  Aiden Brock pitched the final 2.1 innings and was charged with one run and three hits while also striking out three.

Another pitcher's duel took place in the finale with the onyl scoring taking place in the second on a two-run single by Wartburg's JoJo McNair.  BVU starter Dalton Glenn pitched 6.1 innings, allowed just the two runs and five hits while striking out seven.

BVU, which outhit the Knights 9-5 in the contest, tried to rally in the ninth, getting a one-out double by Parker Truesdell followed by a walk from Tyler Stoltze, but Wartburg turned a double-play from the outfield to end the game and strand one runner.  Austin Scott came on in relief of Glenn and struck out three while working a perfect 1.2 innings.

Truesdell finished 2-for-4 while Caden Mathewson also doubled and registered two hits.

Buena Vista dips to 9-16 overall (7-13 A-R-C) and will step out of conference play to host top-ranked Washington University of St. Louis for a three-game series next weekend beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday.
