STORM LAKE, Iowa (April 10, 2021) - Luther College scored eight times in the top of the eighth inning of game two to erase a 7-1 Buena Vista lead, as the Norse went on to win the game 10-7 to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Beavers after edging BVU 2-1 in the opener on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Tyler Tennyson belted a three-run double during the sixth inning that gave BVU a 5-1 lead before
Ryley McGregor scorched a two-run double an inning later to extend it to a six-run cushion. Tennyson finished the game with a team-high four RBI.
Luther did nearly all of its damage with two outs. After a sacrifice fly resulted in the second out, the Norse then strung together back-to-back singles and a run-scoring double to get within 7-4. The Norse were then hit by a pitch on consecutive pitches to get within two before a bases loaded walk made it 7-6. The big blow came on a three-run double off the bat of Luke Plunkett that gave Luther its first lead of the contest at 9-7. The Norse then tacked on one more run in the ninth for the game's final score.
Calvin Harris doubled twice to also finish 2-for-5 along with Tennyson. Senior Tyler Stolze was 1-for-3 with a double, two walks and scored three times.
Mason Gehling had one of his best starts of the year for BVU despite getting a no-decision. He went 6.0 innings, allowing just four hits and one run, while walking one and striking out four.Â
Austin Scott suffered the loss in relief after being charged with four runs on just one hit while hitting four batters over just one inning of work.
The opener of the series was a pitcher's duel from the start as Tennyson matched Luther ace Tyler Boesel. Each team pushed across one run in the third inning before Luther scored the eventual game-winner in the fifth on a throwing error by the Beavers. Tennyson pitched six strong innings, scattering five hits, striking out six and walking only two.Â
Stoltze doubled for BVU's only extra-base hit of the game as each team finished with five hits.Â
Easton Bahr drove in the team's only run on a fielder's choice.
Buena Vista has now dropped six straight contests overall and sits at 8-11 on the year (6-8 A-R-C). The team will look to split the weekend series with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday. The Norse improve to 13-5 (9-1 A-R-C). First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
