PELLA, Iowa - For the second straight match, the Buena Vista volleyball team captured the opening set but then couldn't keep that momentum going the rest of the way, as the Beavers fell on the road Wednesday night at Central College in four sets.
BVU had 11 kills and just three errors in that first set while holding the Dutch to nine kills and eight errors en route to a 25-17 victory. The tides began to turn in the second as Central posted 17 kills compared to just five for the Beavers. The Dutch held on in both the second and third to win 25-22 and 25-23, respectively. Central then closed the match out in the fourth by using a late surge to pull away for a 25-17 victory.
Junior
Sydney McLaren turned in a team-leading 15 kills for the Beavers and added 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the year. Freshman
Skylar Cole chipped in with a career-high six kills and four block assists while sophomore
Taylor Caves had six kills and three block assists. Sophomore Taylor Wedemyer tallied 28 assists and tied junior
Jade Hays for the team lead with 14 digs.Â
Central (3-3, 3-3 A-R-C) got a match-high 18 kills for Kayleigh Fite and 16 from Krissa Larson.
"Central was a scrappy team that just simply out-competed us," said BVU head coach
Aubrey Havlichek. "We resorted back to our comfort zone and became one dimensional offensively, and I thought our back court struggled to make plays. This team is capable of much more and we'll look to bounce back on the road at a tough opponent on Saturday."
Buena Vista drops to 2-3 overall and in conference play and will look to end its current three-match losing skid when the team visits Loras College on Saturday afternoon for a 4:00 p.m. showdown with the Duhawks.  Â
