Men's Basketball Wins against Cougars for Third Straight Win

River Forest, Ill. (February 7, 2021) - The Buena Vista men's basketball team was on the road for the second straight day and picked up its third straight win overall by rolling to an 89-74 non-conference victory at Concordia-Chicago on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Michael Demers led all scorers with a season-high 26 points while also hauling in seven rebounds.  Fellow senior Garret Sittner followed with 18 points and matched a career-best with six assists.  That duo combined to make 7-of-13 attempts from long distance while the rest of the team combined to go 2-of-8.  Jake Thompson chimed in with 15 points, matched a career-best with six rebounds while setting a career-high with four steals.  Freshman Zane Neubaum was the final Beaver to score in double figures with 10 points.  He matched Demers with seven rebounds and also dished out four assists.  As a team, the Beavers handed out 24 assists on 34 made field goals.

BVU scored the game's first five points before the Couagars (0-5) followed with a quick 9-2 spurt to take a slim 9-7 lead, but Demers ran off eight straight points for the Beavers which gave them the lead for good.  A bucket from senior Brendan Gary gave them their first double-digit advantage of the contest at 29-19 with under six minutes to play in the first half.  Concordia was only able to get as close as six with BVU taking a 41-32 lead into the half.

The margin hovered around nine or 10 points for the first 10 minutes of the second half before a 19-7 run by the Beavers over the next eight minutes allowed them to pull away.  The team led by as many 19 points in the final two minutes en route to their largest point total of the season.

BVU finished the contest shooting a season-high 55.7 percent from the field and converted 12-of-15 attempts at the free-throw line.  Concordia did shoot 50 percent from the field and made two more three-pointers in the game than BVU, but was outscored 12-3 at the free-throw line and was out-rebounded 30-16, incuding a 10-5 mark on the offensive glass.

Buena Vista improves to 5-1 overall and will now prepare itself for a pivotal conference match-up against unbeaten Dubuque (8-0) on Wednesday night (Feb. 10) inside of Siebens Fieldhouse with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
