STORM LAKE, Iowa (November 23, 2021) - The American Rivers Conference recently announced its 2021 All-Conference Teams as voted on by the league coaches, and Buena Vista was well-represented with eight overall selections along with three Honorable Mention honorees.
BVU had four selections on the defensive side with three others coming on offense and the final spot on special teams.
Senior
Tanner Frost, who was second on the team in total tackles was a First Team selection at linebacker with fellow senior defensive lineman
Mason Wickett also drawling First Team accolades. During conference play, Frost averaged nearly five tackles per contest and totaled 1.5 sacks. Wickett, meanwhile, totaled 31 total tackles against conference foes, as he and Frost both posted eight and 10 total tackles against Coe College late in the season. They were joined by Second Team selections
Brady McConaty and
Jalen Moore. McConaty was the team's leading tackler on the year and ranked ninth overall among all players in the conference at 7.5 tackles per game. Moore helped anchor the Beaver secondary and posted a pair of pass break up and intercepted two passes.
The group helped establish the team as one of the top defenses in the league this season. BVU was ranked fourth overall in total defense and second in defending the run, allowing only 95.6 rushing yards per game during conference play. Â
Offensively, the Beavers established themselves as one of the more explosive and balanced team in the league. Sophomore quarterback
Brandon Kyles used both his arms and his legs effectively all season and was awarded for his performance by being named one of the two First Team quarterbacks. During conference play, Kyles was ranked 10th in the A-R-C in rushing yards per game (49.8) and 141.3 yards passing. His 238.1 yards of total offense per game trailed only Blaine Hawkins who was named the A-R-C Offensive Player of the Year. Kyles had five conference games in which he threw multiple touchdown passes, finishing with 13 against league foes. Among his go-to receivers all season was senior
Eric Pacheco, who becomes a three-time First Team selection. He ranked second in the league averaging 100.3 yards per game during conference play and finishing with nine touchdowns. He had five straight conference games with at least 100 yards, including 10 for 163 yards and three scores at Simpson. During the team's victory over Wartburg, Pacheco hauled in eight catches for 146 yards.
Among the anchors of the offensive line was senior
John Corcoran who was voted as a Second Team selection. He helped lead the way in the trenches which allowed BVU to average over 380 total offensive yards per game, including one of the stronger rushing games in the league. Â
The three Honorable Mention All-Conference accolades for the team include offensive lineman
Braden Ehn, placekicker
Ramon Garcia and punter
Brandon Woodland.
The eight total selections by BVU was the program's highest total since also landing eight back in 2013. Central College led all teams this season with 17 all-conference selections with Coe and Wartburg each finishing just ahead of the Beavers with nine.
