Box Score STORM LAKE, Iowa - The Buena Vista University football team came in fresh off a bye week on Saturday to host Nebraska Wesleyan on Homecoming, and the Beavers dominated the game from the opening kickoff en route to a convincing 50-7 victory over the Prairie Wolves.
Buena Vista led 13-0 after one quarter and added three touchdowns in the second period to make it a 33-0 halftime lead.
Ramon Garcia added his third field goal of the game along with a receiving touchdown from Huebner to push the cushion to 43-0 after three. Griffith added a 24-yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter for the Beavers final score while the Prairie Wolves avoided the shutout with a 10-yard touchdown pass with 1:22 remaining.
BVU gained 561 yards of total offense in the contest while holding Nebraska Wesleyan to only 104. The Beavers rushed for a season-high 255 yards on the ground, including 89 from quarterback
Brandon Kyles on 14 carries.
Keaton Huebner and
Mason Griffith each ran for more than 50 yards and scored one touchdown apiece with Huebner also adding a receiving score. Defensive lineman
Mason Wickett also got in on the fun and powered his way through for a three-yard rushing touchdown to make it 26-0 midway through the second quarter.
Kyles was just as effective with his arm, completing 22-of-28 passes for 285 yards and three scores, including a 48-yard strike to
Eric Pacheco, who finished with eight grabs and 141 yards on the day.
Colby Laughlin followed with five catches and 62 yards.
Terry Carter completed just 6-of-21 pass attempts for 37 yards and was intercepted once. BVU also intercepted a pass when NWU tried a little trickery with a halfback deep throw down field.
Jalen Moore,
Micah Cooper and
Manny Chavez all intercepted passes for the Beavers while
Brady McConaty turned in four tackles, including a pair for a loss. BVU held NWU (3-4, 1-4 A-R-C) to only eight first downs and just 10 net yards rushing.
"Today was a fantastic day for our program," said BVU head coach
Grant Mollring. "It was a total team win, and I am extremely proud of the trust our men put into each other. Hopefully this is a springboard to the second half of the conference season. I am very proud of all those involved with our program."
Buena Vista pulls even on the year at 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the American Rivers Conference. The team will look to move over the .500 mark when it travels to Simpson College (1-6, 1-4 A-R-C) next Saturday, October 23, for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. The Storm were handed a 48-21 road loss at the University of Dubuque.
