Men's Basketball to face Simpson in Home Opener

STORM LAKE, Iowa (January 27, 2021) - Buena Vista University men's basketball team will play their home opener against Simpson College in Siebens Fieldhouse. This is the first game BVU has hosted since the A-R-C tournament last February due to COVID-19 scheduling changes.

SERIES HISTORY
BVU's long-standing history with Simpson College began in the 1921-22 season. Thursday will be the 149th meeting between the programs. The Beavers have kept a narrow edge over the Storm for their all-time matchups, leading 75-73. BVU and Simpson split the regular season series last year. Facing each other in back-to-back games, the Storm defeated the Beavers at Siebens Fieldhouse, bringing the season to an end in a 86-70 loss.

ABOUT THE STORM 
Thursday's game will be the third time Simpson takes the floor this season as they hope to get their first win.  The Storm's last time out was a tough 84-65 home loss against undefeated Dubuque. Sophomore Andrew Curran scored a career-high 17 points in that game. As a team, Simpson is averaging 64.5 ppg and shooting just shy of 40 percent both overall and from beyond the arc. The Storm is a relatively young team, with only three seniors on the roster. Sophomore Collin Lister leads the team in scoring at 11.5 ppg with three others in double digits, Kade Tatkenhorst (11.0 ppg), Andrew Curran (10.5 ppg), and Chris Honz (10.0 ppg). No player on their team has stood out from long range, only Tatkenhorst and Tyler Johnson scoring more than one. 

LAST TIME OUT
BVU defeated Wartburg last Saturday in their season opener, collecting a road win by a score of 82-78. Four Beavers scored in double figures, with A-R-C Player of the Week Michael Demers leading at 21 points. Jake Thompson and Brendan Gary put up 16 and 14 points, respectively, and freshman Zane Neubaum had a strong opening performance as a Beaver. Neubaum scored 10 points as one of BVU's starters. The Beavers connected nearly 48 percent from the field, along with making 10-of-33 from deep. Despite Wartburg fighting back in the second half to overcome a 13-point halftime deficit, the Beavers were able to hold off the Knights through consistent 41-point halves.
