Men's Basketball Season Comes to End after 86-70 Loss to Simpson

STORM LAKE, Iowa (February 25, 2020) - The Buena Vista men's basketball team saw its season come to an end on Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of the American Rivers Conference Tournament after an 86-70 home loss to Simpson College.

The Beavers couldn't overcome a rough shooting night from long range, making a season-low five from behind the arc (5-of-24) while the Storm had the touch at 13-for-21.  Simpson finished the contest shooting 62 percent from the field overall with BVU sitting at 44 percent.

Senior Timothy Jeffries was the only Beaver to reach double figures in scoring, wrapping up his career with a game-high 27 points, including an 8-of-11 effort from the free-throw line.  Lincoln Rock closed out his playing career with nine points and four assists.  Junior Michael Demers was held to only one made three-pointer in the contest and just seven points overall.  His one make gives him 72 for the season which is the seventh-highest total in single-season history.  He also dished out a game-high five assists. Senior Noah Schmitt with a game-leading eight rebounds in his final career contest.

As it was on Saturday when the two teams met up for the regular season finale, the game was back-and-forth through the first 10 minutes of the first half with BVU clinging to a 17-16 lead.  The Beavers could never string enough of a run together in the contest as the Storm used a 16-3 run over the next five minutes to open up a double-digit lead en route to a 15-point halftime lead at 46-31.

The Storm came out and started the second half with four three-point buckets over the first five minutes and extended their lead to 18, and BVU was never able to get back any closer than 15 after trailing by as many as 26.

Conor Riordan scored 22 points to help lead the Storm, including 4-of-4 from downtown.  Kyle Wagner was right behind with 21 points.  Simpson has now won three straight games and will advance to play at top-seed and 10th-ranked Nebraska Wesleyan on Thursday night.

Buena Vista wraps up the year at 18-8 overall.  The game was also the final contest in the careers of Jeffries, Rock, Schmitt and Alex Rogers, Jr.
