Box Score INDIANOLA, Iowa (February 22, 2020) - The Buena Vista men's basketball team wrapped up its regular season on Saturday afternoon with a tough 85-72 road loss inside Cowles Fieldhouse against Simpson College.
It was a back-and-forth game throughout the entire first half with neither team able to put together much of a run. The Storm used the long ball to their advantage by making 8-of-12 in the half, including back-to-back makes to end the half and take a 42-36 lead into the break. The second half was much of the same with the game remaining in single-digits and the Beavers within 71-69 with just over three minutes left. From there, Simpson used an 8-0 surge to build the first double-digit lead of the game at 79-69 and only 1:45 to play.
Junior
Michael Demers led the Beavers with 17 points, despite making only 3-of-11 shots from downtown. Those three makes, however, move him up to seventh on the program's all-time single-season list with 71. Next up on the list is Andre Wagner (74) in 2007-08. Senior
Timothy Jeffries followed Demers with 16 points, while
Dominic Sesma chipped in with nine points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Brendan Gary came off the bench and scored eight points and also hauled in seven rebounds.
As a team, BVU was held to just 6-of-30 from downtown and 39 percent from the field overall. Simpson was 11-of-21 from long range in the contest and got 21 points from senior Conor Riordan, to lift the Storm into next week's American Rivers Conference Tournament.
Buena Vista falls to 18-7 overall (9-7 A-R-C) and is the No. 4 seed in the tournament. The Beavers will turn around and host the No. 5-seed Storm in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
