Box Score 2 TOPEKA, Kan. (February 22, 2020) - It was a strong start to the season for the Buena Vista baseball team on Saturday as the Beavers picked up a 9-8 walk-off victory against Hamline University in game one of a doubleheader before rolling to a 16-5 triumph to complete the sweep in game two.
BVU scored three times in the eighth inning to take its first lead at 8-5 in the opener before the Pipers rallied in the top half of the ninth with three runs to tie it up at 8-8. In the home half of that inning, sophomore
Logan Mueller came through in the clutch for the Beavers with a walk-off single to score
Nick Henrichs and give BVU the thrilling one-run triumph.
Senior
Bryce Rheault picked right up where he left off last season by going 3-for-5 in the contest with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. He came through with a big two-run double in the fourth before giving the team its first lead with a run-scoring single in the eighth. Fellow senior
Tyler Tennyson hit the team's first home run of the year in the fifth which tied the game at 5-5. Junior
Coleman Roberts doubled home a run in the eighth to give the Beavers the three-run cushion. A pair of runs came across earlier in the contest on a sacrifice fly to center.\
Henrichs, who also finished with three hits, led off the bottom half of the ninth inning with his first double of the season before Mueller followed with the game-winner.
All nine starters had at least one hit in the game for BVU which out-hit the Pipers, 15-6. Six of the 15 base knocks went for extra-bases, including five doubles.
Tennyson came on in relief to pitch the final three innings and picked up the win. He allowed three runs on three hits while striking out three. Henrichs got the start and worked the first three innings and surrendered four runs (two earned) without allowing a single hit. He walked six and struck out four.
