Men's Hoops Looking to Continue Hot Start as it Returns to A-R-C Play

STORM LAKE, Iowa (January 2, 2020) - The Buena Vista men's basketball team is back in action tonight for the first time in three weeks when it hosts Coe College in what is a make-up game, after the originally scheduled game was postponed on November 26.  BVU then turns right around and hosts Luther College on Saturday afternoon.

Last Time Out
The Beavers have not played since rolling to a 105-52 non-conference home victory over Faith Baptist on December 12.  Junior Michael Demers had a career night with 23 points, eight rebounds and eight assists (all career highs).  Five players scored in double figures for BVU on a night when the team shot 14-of-40 from downtown and 49.4 percent from the field overall.  It was a 22-point Beaver lead at the half and the team continued to roll over the final 20 minutes by scoring 61 second-half points.

About Coe
The Kohawks have won three of their last four games entering Thursday night with the only setback coming in overtime against Concordia on December 20.  The team's most recent outing was on December 22 when it picked up a 70-54 non-conference road win against Randolph.  For the year, the team is scoring just under 80.0ppg, is shooting 46 percent from the field and better than 35 percent from long range.  Adam McDermott is the team's leading scorer at 15.8ppg followed closely by Autin Roth at 15.2ppg.  McDermott is shooting over 50 percent from the field and 41 percent from beyond the arc.  He also chips in with 5.1 rebounds per contest and is second on the team with 13 steals.  Jacob Robertson leads the team on the boards by grabbing 6.2 per game with the Kohawks being outrebounded by 2.5 per contest.

About Luther
The Norse have dropped four straight games overall as it returns to action on Saturday.  Their most recent outing was an 84-59 road loss at Cornell College on December 14.  After beginning the year at 3-1, Luther has scored over 70 points just twice over the next seven games.  The team began conference play with an eight-point loss to Loras before falling 84-65 at Coe.  The team has three players averaging double figures in scoring, led by James Kappus' 10.7ppg.  Aaron Blumburg is right behind at 10.5ppg with Gage Thompson at 10.4ppg.  As a team, the Norse are shooting 40 percent from the field and are 17-of-45 from downtown through their first two conference games.  Blumburg has made a team-leading 18 treys on the year with Kappus shooting 85 percent from the free-throw line.  The team averages only 35 rebounds per contest and are outrebounded by nearly 7.0rpg.

About Buena Vista
The Beavers look to continue its fast start to the season and remain perfect on their home court.  The team has won all six home games to this point of the year and hasn't lost inside of Siebens Fieldhouse over its last eight games, dating back to last season.  For the year, BVU is scoring an average of 91.5ppg which is tied for second in the league.  On the flip-side, the Beavers are allowing a league-low 69.5ppg and has allowed a team to score over 80 points just once all season.  It has made at least 10 three-point buckets in a game seven times, including a season-high 18 at Bethany Lutheran.  Senior Timothy Jeffries leads the way in scoring at 19.3ppg which also ranks third in the A-R-C.  Four of the team's five starters are averaging double figures in scoring.  Junior Michael Demers has made a team-high 28 three-point baskets and is shooting 35.4 percent from downtown.  Fellow junior Lincoln Rock is 48.9 percent from long range and is averaging 2.0 makes per game.  As a team, the Beavers are shooting 34.7 percent from downtown and ranks 11th in Division III with 11.8 makes per game.  Defensively, the Beavers average 42.5 rebounds per contest and is out-rebounding teams by an average of 10.0 boards per game.
