Box Score RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Buena Vista University baseball team saw its season come to and end on Sunday afternoon after a tough 11-5 loss to second-ranked Concordia Chicago in an elimination game.
The wind was blowing out to left and left center in the contest and the Cougars used that to their advantage with a pair of solo home runs. The first of the two came in the first inning to grab a quik 1-0 lead. Bryce Rheault, who became the program's single-season hit kind with three hits on Saturday, tied things in the bottom of the inning with his third of the season.
Concordia then used a four-run second inning to build a 5-1 lead and never trailed the rest of the way. BVU did pull within 5-4 in the bottom half but could not get any closer. Concordia Chicago scored in all but two of the innings and took a 10-5 lead to the ninth before adding one final run following a weather delay.
BVU finished with 12 hits in the contest and had seven players finish with at least one. Rheault led the way with three while Renning had two. Logan Mueller also doubled and had two hits while McGregor had two hits and an RBI to go along with one run scored.
Eric LaRue got the start but was roughed up for six runs and seven hits over just 2.1 innings. Tyler Tennyson came on in relief to pitch 3.2 innings where he allowed two runs and struck out three. Austin Scott and Tate Holmes saw their first action of the postseason and combined to pitch the final three innings.
The loss not only marked the final game of the season for BVU but also the final contest in the career of six seniors - Renning, Noah Paper, Alex Savary, Porter Sartor, Andy Bower and Egan Bonde.
Buena Vista concludes its season at 26-19 and won 14 of its final 17 games.
