Box Score RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Ryley McGregor lined a double into right center in the bottom of the fourth inning that broke a scoreless game, as the Beaver bats came alive during a 7-3 victory over St. John's Saturday morning in the first elimination game of regional tournament.
Back-to-back doubles by Bryce Rheault and Joe Rock with one out in the fifth added a key insurance run to make it 3-0. St. John's loaded the bases in the sixth after starter Nick Henrichs hit a couple batters. The Johnnies did come through with a bases loaded walk and two-run single after Tyler Tennyson came on in relief to pull even at 3-3 before Tennyson got a big strikeout to end any further damage.
BVU then took over in the seventh with four straight hits to start the inning, including a second double from Rock that put the Beavers back ontop 4-3. Rock came around to score on a Nick Henrichs single to center and later scored on a Tyler Stoltze RBI single. Stoltze capped the scoring after crossing the plate on a wild pitch.
Gage Smart came on in relief of Tennyson to start the eighth and worked out of a jam before working around a one-out walk in the ninth to secure the win.
Rheault helped lead the charge at the plate going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. The second of those doubles pushed his season hit total to 72 and putting him atop the program's all-time single-season list, breaking the previous mark of Brandon Pietrzyk from 2010.
Rock also had three hits, including the double and two RBI as McGregor also had two hits. Buena Vista had five doubles in the contest and now has 86 on the year which is the fourth-most in school history.
Henrichs went 5.2 innings and was charged with all three runs despite allowing only one hit. He walked three and struck out one. Tennyson and Smart combined for four punch outs over the final 2.1 innings.
Buena Vista improves to 26-18 and will now take on the loser of Concordia Chicago and Baldwin Wallace later this afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
