Storm Sweep Beavers to Win Season-Opening Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

INDIANOLA - Buena Vista was going after a series win to begin American Rivers Conference play after taking Friday night's opener at Simpson College, but the Beavers were plagued by six errors in Saturday's opener and a pair of homeruns in the nightcap as they fell by scores of 8-5 and 9-7.

Simpson scored three runs in the first inning of the opener before adding one more in the second for a 4-0 lead.  BVU got on the board with an RBI groundout from Peyton Renning in the third but the Storm scored an unearned run in the fourth to go up 5-1.

BVU scored three unanswered runs to get back within 5-4 in the seventh, but the Storm answered right back with a four-run frame in their half of the seventh to break open an 8-5 lead.  Joe Rock picked up an RBI ground out in the eighth for the game's final score.  Earlier in the game he recorded his first career triple which was one of four extra-base knocks for the team in the contest.

Egan Bonde suffered the loss on the mound and is now 2-1 on the year.  The lefty went five innings, allowed five runs (three earned) and 11 hits while striking out one.

Simpson had 13 hits in the game but only two were for extra-bases.

BVU went in front 2-0 in the nightcap until the fourth inning when Simpson hit a pair of homeruns, including a three-run shot to left, to take a 6-2 lead.

Bryce Rheault singled home a run in the fifth and later came around to score on a wild pitch as the Beavers got within 6-4.  The Storm, however, answered right back in the bottom half with three runs to extend their lead to 9-4.

The Beavers put together a rally in the seventh, scoring a pair of runs to make it a two-run game, and got the tying run to the plate but came up short.

Coleman Roberts went 2-for-4 with a triple and one RBI while Tyler Stoltze added two hits and one RBI.

Tyler Tennyson took the loss for BVU after being roughed up for six runs and eight hits over four innings of work.

Zach Hollingsworth had the big three-run home run for the Storm for his only hit of the game, but he did come on to pitch the last 2.1 innings to pick up the save and help Simpson improve to 7-3.

Buena Vista drops to 7-9 with the two losses (1-2 A-R-C) and will step out of conference play on Tuesday, March 26, to host Hamline University in a rescheduled doubleheader.  Game one of that twinbill is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
