Beavers Split Doubleheader with Hamline on Saturday

Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Buena Vista baseball team began its afternoon on Saturday with its second straight comeback victory (8-6) in game one of a doubleheader against Hamline before the Pipers held on to knock off the Beavers in the nightcap, 6-3.

After having to wait over an hour to start their opener due to the prior game still being in process, the Beavers didn't let the wait hinder their bats as they jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first with a sac fly from Coleman Roberts and a two-out single from Tyler Stoltze.

Hamline did respond in the bottom half to tie things at 2-2 and later took a 6-2 lead with four runs in the third.

BVU stormed right back to push even in the fifth starting with a two-run double from Peyton Renning.  Stoltze then laced an RBI single to right center before Colton Mills picked up his first career RBI with a single of his own.

Renning then scorched a triple to dead center to leadoff the seventh inning and scored one batter later on Roberts' RBI single to left.  After Roberts was caught stealing, Reed Fitze launced the team's second triple of the inning to centerfield and later scored on Stoltze's RBI single back up the middle.  Gage Smart, who came on with two outs in the sixth would finish things off in the bottom half to secure the team's third straight victory.

Stoltze finished with a season-high three hits and three RBI to help lead BVU at the dish while Renning was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored.  Smart picks up the win in relief, allowing just one hit, walking one and striking out two.

The Pipers were the ones getting off to a fast start in the nightcap, posting four runs in the top of the first inning and they would never trail.  BVU cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first with another RBI single from Roberts before Tyler Tennyson came through with a big two-run double to right center.

That's how things stood until Hamline pushed across two more runs in the fifth inning to extend the advantage to 6-2.  The Beavers got one run back in the sixth when Noah Paper doubled to right center.  They got the tying run to the plate with two outs in the seventh but could not get a big hit as the Pipers secured the split

Renning, Roberts an Bryce Rheault each had two hits in the contest as Renning extends his current hitting streak to eight.

Eric LaRue got the start but faced just three batters and was charged with the loss.  Devon VanHouten took over and allowed just four hits and struck out six over four innings of work.

Buena Vista is now 5-5 on the year while the Pipers sit 2-4.  The Beavers turn right around and take the field again on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. when they take on Macalester in a single nine-inning contest.
