PAPILLION, Neb. (November 19, 2019) -
Erin Streit banked in a three-pointer to force overtime, and then scored all seven points in the extra period to help send the Buena Vista women's basketball team to a thrilling 65-64 non-conference road victory at Nebraska Christian College on Tuesday night.
BVU trailed 58-55 before Streit tied things up with her only long range make of the night. She then had a look to win the game in regulation but her shot from about six feet was too strong off the glass. Â
The Sentinels (0-8) scored the first four points of overtime and continued to lead by four with just over one minute remaining. Streit then made a layup to make it a one score game with 50 seconds and was fouled on the play but missed the free-throw. Nebraska Christian came up empty with a shot attempt with 30 seconds to go, and Streit came through again with a layup to tie things at 64-64 with 13 seconds on the clock. She was again fouled on the play and her free-throw went through, and after a 30-second timeout, the Sentinels had a chance to win it but couldn't get a shot off.
Streit finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.Â
Erin Gerke added a team-leading 18 points, seven boards and four assists while
Destiny Einerwold chimed in with 15 points, including a 7-of-9 effort at the charity stripe.Â
Jennifer Schneider narrowly missed a double-double of her own, scoring nine points and grabbing nine reboounds.
Buena Vista started strong, shooting 54 percent from the field in the opening quarter and led 21-20 at the quarter break. It made two more long range buckets and was 3-of-4 at the free-throw line in the second quarter to extend the margin to three (34-31) at the half. The team struggled to get shots to fall in the third quarter, making just 3-of-12 attempts in the period as the Sentinels took a 50-44 lead to the fourth and led by as many as eight.
The Beavers finished the game shooting under 33 percent from the field, despite going 6-of-17 from downtown and 73 percent from the charity stripe. The win gives head coach
David Wells his first collegiate head coaching victory.
Now 1-2 overall, BVU will travel to Chicago, Ill., and take part in the Chi-town Classic this upcoming Friday and Saturday. The Beavers begin play on November 22 against North Park University at 6 p.m. before taking on Elmhurst on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
