STORM LAKE - After nearly two weeks of practice, the Buena Vista basketball team finally got to face someone other than itself when it hosted Dordt University in an exhibition game on Tuesday night. The Beavers hung tough all night, but the Defenders were able to use a strong second quarter to break the game open en route to a 91-63 victory inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
BVU trailed only 26-21 after the first quarter, but Dordt then scored 14 points off turnovers in the second quarter and outscored BVU 23-10 to take a 49-31 lead into the half. The Beavers managed to hang around throughout the second half, but couldn't put together enough of a run to get any closer than 20.
Erin Streit turned in 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting to lead three players in double figures.
Destiny Einerwold followed with 15 points and
Erin Gerke added 10, as all three played at least 25 minutes.
The Beavers did alot of their damage at the charity stripe, getting to the line 31 times and converting 22. Einerwold made a team-high five as Streit and
Jennifer Schneider each made all four. The team finished the game shooting 34.5 percent shooting from the field and was held to just 3-of-15 from downtown.
Both teams combined for 51 turnovers.
The Defenders were led by Erika Feenstra's game-high 31 points on 12-of-14 shooting. She also grabbed six rebounds and had three steals to help the team improve to 2-0 overall.
Buena Vista will now be off until beginning the regular season on Friday, November 15 against St. Olaf in the opening game of the Saint Benedict Tournament. Tip-off against the Oles is set for 6 p.m.
