Beavers Notch Big Home Win over Dubuque

Box Score STORM LAKE - After playing a pair of wild sets to begin Saturday's home match against Dubuque, the Buena Vista volleyball team made quick work of the Spartans in the third to post a much-needed 3-0 victory and improve to 3-2 in conference play.

The first two sets were both wilde back-and-forth frames, coming down to the wire in each one.  Dubuque led 8-3 in the early going of set one before the Beavers rallied back and eventually tie things up at 17-17.  It was again all-square at 20-20 before kills by Kaitie Serkiz and Hannah Smith followed by an ace serve by Taylor Wedemyer made it a 23-20 lead.  Dubuque got back within a point before the Beavers closed things out with an attack error by Dubuque, one of 10 hitting miscues by the Spartans in the set.

Both teams combined for 34 kills in the second-set marathon, but BVU was able to take advantage of 11 hitting errors by the Spartans, including back-to-back errors to end it.  Dubuque held set-point three straight times before the Beavers rolled off three straight points to end it and hold on for the 30-28 win.

The Beavers jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the third and was in control nearly the entire set en route to a strong 25-14 victory.

Freshman Kaitie Serkiz finished with a match-high 12 kills to help lead BVU while Hannah Smith (9) and Sydney McLaren (7) followed.  McLaren had just one error and posted a .261 attack percentage, while completing a second-straight double-double and seventh overall by adding 11 digs.  Wedemyer dished out 34 assists and added her 14th double-double of the year by also chipping in with 11 digs.  Summer Goss finished with a match-high 29 digs and moved into fourth-place on the program's all-time list with 1,378.

"What a thriller it was today," said BVU head coach Aubrey Havlichek.  "That second set win was huge for us.  To grind out a 30-28 set win is tough.  I'm so proud of our squad for bouncing back from last night and taking care of business.  I think we still had a bit of a slow start in set one, but we stuck with it, trusted the process and worked to find a groove in our style of play.  Summer was phenomenal defensively and in serve reception, giving our hitters ample opportunity at the net.  Her 29 digs in just three sets is outstanding.Kaitie cleaned up her errors today and continued to score."

The win is the sixth in the last seven matches of the Beavers who improve to 9-11 overall and wraps up the regular season home schedule at 5-4.  The team steps out of league play on October 16 for a non-conference match at Bethany Lutheran that begins at 7 p.m.
