Box Score It was a rough start to conference play for the Buena Vista football team on Saturday afternoon as the Beavers were held to just 100 yards of total offense and struggled to slow down Wartburg during a 63-0 loss to the Knights inside Walston-Hoover Stadium in Waverly, Iowa.
The Knights scored four first quarter touchdowns, including one punt block return for a score, and built an early 28-0. BVU could not find a groove offensively, being held to under 30 yards of total offense in the first half as Wartburg added two more second quarter touchdowns and led 42-0 at the break.
The Knights began to filter in their reserves early in the third quarter and began with a pair of short touchdown drives and led 56-0 heading to the final frame. Wartburg finished with five rushing touchdowns in the contest, and the final came from a yard out with 5:34 to play for the game's final score.
Cole Miller, who came in leading the league and sitting in the top-12 in Division III in passing yards per game at over 330.0ypg, was held to just 60 yards on Saturday on just 13-of-30. Taylor Youngblood took over and completed 3-of-5 attempts for 33 yards.
Eric Pacheco caught for passes for 27 yards with Kobi Martin Jr. also catching a career-high four passes for just six yards.
Josh Werge was the team's leading rusher with 23 yards on 11 carries as Martin Jr. finished with 13 yards on 13 attempts.
The Knights (2-1, 1-0 A-R-C) finished with 403 yards of total offense, including 259 through the air. Matt Sacia completed 13-of-23 attempts for 199 yards and one score. Bennett Goettsch led a balanced rushing attack with 69 yards on eight carries. Connor Bailey had 10 rushes for 50 yards.
Gary Weaver led the Beavers with 10 tackles, including one for a sack. Reed Kruse was close behind with seven.
Buena Vista falls to 1-2 overall (0-1 A-R-C) and looks bounce back and even its conference mark when it entertains Coe College next Saturday inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00pm.
