Box Score The Buena Vista baseball team got solid pitching all day long, and the bats were explosive in the nightcap in particular, as the Beavers earned a doubleheader split against Salem St. on Saturday, dropping the opener, 3-2, before bouncing back with a strong 13-1 triumph in game two.
Salem State got on the board first with a two-out RBI single in the first inning before it got a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead in the third. BVU was the home team in the contest and rallied back in the fourth when Alex Savary tripled in a run with a laser off the fence in left field before Porter Sartor drove him home with an RBI double down the left field line.
The eventual game-winning run came across in the fifth inning when Salem State lined an RBI single just past first base to take the 3-2 lead, and that margin would hold up down the stretch.
Both pitchers went the distance for his respective team, including a five-hit, five strikeout performance from Gage Smart. Tyler Tennyson, along with Savary, each had two hits in the game, as BVU had eight overall.
Game two was all BVU from the opening inning as the Beavers came firing back with three in the third, two more in the fourth, and five in the final frame.
Stoltze had a pair of RBI singles in the contest while Tennyson had a career-high four hits to help lead the charge. The team had seven players register two base hits, including Stoltze who also registered three RBI.
Eric LaRue made his first collegiate start and picked up the win after working 4.2 innings, allowing no runs on just three hits. He pitched around four walks and did manage three strikeouts. Andy Bower gave up just one run in his 1.1 innings of relief while Nick Henrichs pitched a scoreless seventh with a strikeout and walk.
The win gave BVU head coach, Steve Eddie, his 399th career victory. He'll get a chance to reach that prestigious milestone when the team takes on Oberlin for a nine-inning game at 1:30pm.
