Box Score FULTON, Mo. - It was another balanced scoring effort for the Buena Vista men's basketball team on Monday afternoon, as the Beavers had five guys score in double figures to help lead them to an 80-73 non-conference road victory at Westminster College (Mo.).
Junior Timothy Jeffries turned in a team-high 16 points while sophomore Garrett Sittner came off the bench and posted a career-high 14 points, including a career-high four three-point buckets. Robert Hawkins and Michael Demers followed with 11 points apiece with Hawkins also grabbing six rebounds and dishing out a career-best eight assists. Alex Rogers Jr rounds out the group with 10 points off the bench.
The Beavers had another solid shooting performance by connecting on 55.2 percent from the field overall and going 11-of-28 from long distance. It shared the rock as good as it has all year by dishing out a season-high 21 assists on 32 made field goals.
Buena Vista used a 13-5 surge late in the first half and opened up its largest lead of the afternoon at 39-27 with 1:37 left. The Bluejays rolled off six straight to end the half and cut that lead in half going into the break.
It was a back-and-forth contest throughout the second half with a Connor Winkleman three-pointer just minutes in giving the Beavers their largest lead of the half at 46-35. Wesminster used an 11-3 spurt to get within three at the 13:33 mark but Hawkins came back with back-to-back layups for BVU.
Westminster again threatened late in the game, pulling within 68-66 with under five minutes left, but the Beavers again had an answer with a Jeffries basket. It was still a two-point contest at 72-70 with 3:28 to go, but the Beavers, despite going just 5-of-9 at the free-throw line for the game, hit four straight in the final minute to secure the win.
Westminster was 10-of-24 from beyond the arc and managed to stay in the game by going 15-of-18 at the free-throw line.
Romo Tabb led the Bluejays (4-6) with a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds.
Buena Vista improves to 5-5 on the year and returns home on Wednesday and Thursday for games against Finlandia University (Mich.). Game times against the Lions (0-8) are at 6:00 p.m. on the 19th and 1:00 p.m. on the 20th.
