Box Score Kolby Hilgenberg doubled home the tying run in the sixth and scored on Devin Wagenman's sacrifice fly while Kendall Candor added a key insurance run in the eighth to help lift the Buena Vista baseball team to a 4-2 Iowa Conference victory at Loras College on Tuesday night to complete the series win.
Hilgenberg finished with a pair of doubles in the contest and bumps his team-leading total to 14 on the year. Bryce Rheault and Noah Paper also added two hits with Rheault scoring a pair of runs.
Wagenman drove home the game's first run with an RBI groundout in the fourth. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Duhawks (13-23, 6-15 IIAC) came back with two of their own in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead.
Neither side was able to push a run across in the fifth, and the Beavers took the lead for good with Hilgenberg's double and Wagenman's sacrifice fly. Wagenman now has a team-high 25 RBI on the year with Kendall, who drove in the game's final run in the eighth is right behind at 24.
Blake Vande Hoef made just his second career start and pitched three innings allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits. He also walked three and struck out one. From there, BVU used a pitcher-by-committee, starting with Egan Bonde who went on to pick up his second win of the year. Bonde scattered a pair of hits in his two innings of work before handing the ball over to Tate Holmes who also allowed a pair of base knocks in his two frames.
Gage Smart and Dalton Mason each worked one inning with Mason working around a pair of walks with two strikeouts to chalk up his IIAC-best seventh save of the year. His seven saves moves him up to third on the program's all-time single-season list.
Buena Vista improves to 22-14 (13-8 IIAC). The Beavers now travel to Coe College for a three-game weekend set to wrap up the regular season. Game one of the series is set for Friday afternoon at 3:00pm.
