Beavers Slug Their Way to DH Sweep of Carleton on Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Buena Vista baseball team blasted five home runs combined in Sunday's doubleheader, including a walk-off in the opener, as the Beavers began its 2017 home schedule with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Carleton College.

The Knights hit their first home run of the season in the first inning of game one to take a 1-0 lead.  Bryce Rheault drew a bases loaded walk in the second to even things at one before BVU took its first lead at 2-1 on Poter Sartor's RBI groundout.

Carleton got a two-out RBI single in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2 and that's they way things stood until Kolby Hilgenberg blasted a two-out solo home run well over the fence in left for the 3-2 victory.

Hilgenberg and Devin Wagenman each tallied two hits in the contest as BVU outhit the Knights, 8-5.

Jake Hadaway got the start and pitched six strong innings, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out five and walking only one.  Dalton Mason picked up the win in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out four.

It was all Beavers in the nightcap, as they batted around in the first inning and got two home runs and scored seven times for a 7-0 lead.  Devin Wagenman launched a three-run home run to get the scoring started before Ethan McHenry followed two batters later with a two-run shot.

After Carelton got two runs back in the second, Cale Ewald lifted the first of his two home runs in the contest with one out before Kendall Candor doubled home a run for a 9-2 cushion.

BVU led 10-5 before chalking up six more runs in the sixth, including Ewald's second home run of the contest.  He went 4-for-4 and finished just a triple shy of the cycle.  His five RBI and three runs scored were career-highs along with his four hits.

McHenry finished with two hits, including a double and home run and drove in four.

BVU had 14 hits total, including 10 for extra bases.  Tate Holmes got the win in relief, throwing one inning after taking over for starter Kennan Jones, who pitched the first three.

Buena Vista improves to 15-8 overall and has now won four straight.  It will get back into Iowa Conference play on Tuesday night when the team hosts Nebraska Wesleyan at 6:00pm for the final game of its three-game series.  BVU swept the doubleheader last week in Lincoln.
