Box Score 2 After dropping a tough 3-2 decision in game one of Saturday's doubleheader versus Simpson, the Buena Vista baseball team erupted for a 12-2 (7 inning) victory over the Storm in the finale. The games were the final home contests for the team this season.
Both team scored a run in the first inning to begin the day, and that's how things stood until the Storm took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on an error by the Beavers. BVU was able to push across a run in the seventh to even things at 2-2, but an errant pitch on ball four in the eighth inning, scored a run for the Storm as they held of a ninth inning rally by the Beavers that left the tying run at third base.
Bryce Rheault finished with two of the team's six hits for the home team while Devin Wagenman's double was the only extra-base hit.
Andrew Bower suffered the loss in relief for BVU. He took over for starter Jake Lewis and allowed a run on two hits while striking out two and walking two. Lewis went the first six innings and was charged with two runs (one earned) while walking four.
The Beavers erupted for nine runs in the third inning of game two to take control after Simpson had grabbed a 2-0 lead. Cam Johnson and Kendall Candor each had three-run doubles in the inning as BVU sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning.
Candor reached on an error that scored a run in the fifth before Wagenman's RBI double scored him to make it a 10-run cushion.
Wagenman went 3-for-4 to help lead the surge as Candor was 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Kolby Hilgenberg also had two hits and scored twice. Michael Zellar got the start in his final collegiate home game and chipped in with two hits and two RBI.
Keenan Jones picked up the win, going six innings, allowing just the two early runs on five hits. Jayden Clark came on to pitch the seventh and surrendered a harmless single.
BVU improves to 21-14 (12-8 IIAC) and finishes its home schedule at 8-3. It will now play four straight on the road to end the regular season beginning with Tuesday night's single game at Loras College. The two teams split the doubleheader played in Storm Lake earlier this week.
